Baganda

The Baganda (singular, muganda) are the over 6 million natives of the kingdom nation of Buganda, which was founded around 400 AD. The term Ganda is often used to refer to things concerned with the Baganda. For example the culture of the Baganda may be called the Ganda culture. Probably the most important pillars of Ganda culture and society, are:

  • Kabaka (king and political and spiritual leader);
  • Baganda clans and ancestry (ebika bya Baganda);
  • Baganda customs and cultural norms (obuwangwa n'obulombolombo);
  • Obutaka (the land and environment left by the ancestors); and
  • Luganda language.
