Over the outgoing period, one of Ggwangamujje NY/NJ's main development efforts in Buganda has been improving lives of people in rural areas by providing access to clean water. During the Dallas May 2001 Convention (Olukiiko Ttabamiruka II), Ggwangamujje NY/NJ officials and other groups in North America met with BUCADEF's (Buganda Cultural and Development Foundation) officials from Buganda's government. This event was followed by a visit to BUCADEF's areas of operation in Buganda by Ggwangamujje NY/NJ officials who were impressed with the projects and committed to support BUCADEF in the effort to build wells in Buganda. Ggwangamujje NY/NJ pledged to support the building of wells in Buganda in 2003, which also marked the 10th Anniversary of the official Coronation of Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II. It was also the United Nations International Year for Fresh Water. In November 2002, prior to the celebrations to mark Kabaka Mutebi II’s coronation anniversary, Ggwangamujje NY/NJ organized the first fundraising event in form of a Dinner-Dance to support The Clean Water Project. A net sum of US $13,525 was raised that evening from direct contributions by members, friends and well wishers. Much of Buganda's social organization and development was always provided by the people through the spirit of action for the common good, known as "bulungi bwa nsi" under the influence of the King (Kabaka). This was often the case in the construction and maintenance of communal facilities such as roads, wells and ensuring food security. That social-cultural organization was seriously damaged in 1966, when the Prime Minister Milton Obote abrogated the constitution and subsequently abolished kingdoms and traditional chieftainships. Following the re-establishment of the Buganda monarchy, The Clean Water project, which seeks to construct wells using voluntary labor and skills, as well as materials locally available within the beneficiary communities, should contribute to the revival of the "bulungi bwa nsi" spirit. The contribution of US $13,525 towards The Clean Water Project raised in 2002 has enabled Ggwangamujje NY/NJ to build the following wells:
Ggwangamujje NY/NJ through BUCADEF spent $9,325 for all the five wells completed. |
