Luganda Version

The Luganda School was inaugurated on Monday, June 10th, 2000 and held it's first session on Saturday, October 7th, 2000 with 15 children between the age of 2 and 20 years.

Mission

  • To educate the children on Buganda's customs and heritage.
  • To build a cultural bridge between children in America and Buganda by teaching them:
            • the Luganda language,
            • the history of Uganda, Buganda, Buganda's kings and clan system,
            • the relationship between Buganda and the rest of Uganda regions,
            • love and support for their ancestry as they grow and prosper outside Buganda.
  • To help children nurture a sense of self identity while growing up as productive citizens.
  • To teach children the values of self reliance, team work and how to help those in need.

How the School is Run:

Administration

The school is run by a headmaster with the assistance of a treasurer and secretary. The headmaster, treasurer and secretary are elected biennially. Parents and students also help to run the school in various categories.

The School meets every week on Saturdays.

Fees

Each student pays sixty (US$60.00) dollars per year. The money is used to:
  • Buy books and educational materials such as tapes, Kiganda musical instruments, handicraft accessories such as needles, threads, cloths, njulus, etc.
  • Make trips to amusement parks, zoos, museums, libraries, theatres, etc.
  • Organize an annual picnic

Instruction

The children are taught how to write and speak the Luganda language, Luganda songs, jingles, short plays and stories.

Children are given homework, assignments and other tasks and encouraged to consult their parents for more information concerning the Luganda language.

Other Activities

During the class intercession, dinner is served. In addition, we celebrate birthdays of children who were born in that month. The school session ends with a discussion in which both students and parents participate.
